How to fix “Unfortunately Contacts Has Stopped” Error Message

“Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped.”

   This is one of the most common errors Galaxy S5 owners reported immediately after the lollipop update. Apparently, the new update may have messed up some caches or some data in the phone resulting to some apps and services crashing randomly.

But just because the problem occurred after the update doesn’t mean you have installed a bad firmware just like what some owners believe. No! Samsung didn’t acknowledge this problem so there won’t be any update that will fix it. Fortunately, there is a way to stop it. Here’s how to fix Unfortunately, app has stopped errors.

The following are troubleshooting procedures I used in this post. One of them can actually fix your problem, however, be careful when you decide to perform master reset and factory reset as they’ll actually delete all data saved in your phone’s internal storage.

1. Clear Cache and Data

Try clearing the temporary storage area of your Contacts using these steps:

=> Go to Settings

=> Proceed to Application Manager

=> Select the All tab

=> Choose Contacts

=> Tap Clear Cache

Selecting Clear Data is optional since this will erase all the changes that you have made to some of your Phone app’s settings but it may solve the problem based on some users who have tried it.

Go back to the previous menu and choose Phone

2. Change Date Format

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select More
  3. Under Date and Time, change the format to 24 hours

3. Delete Rogue Apps

Start your phone under Safe Mode, observe if the problem occurs. If not, there is probably a third-party app causing the bug. Exit Safe Mode and try to recall the most recent app that you have installed prior to the problem. Disable it for a while to test whether the error still comes out.

4. Clear Contacts Cache & Data

=> From any Home screen, tap Apps.

=> Tap Settings.

=> Scroll to ‘APPLICATIONS,’ then tap Application manager.

=> Swipe right to the ALL screen.

=> Scroll to and tap Contacts.

=> Tap Clear cache button.

=> Tap Clear data button, then OK.

5. Stop Google+ App

=> From any Home screen, tap Apps.

=> Tap Settings.

=> Scroll to ‘APPLICATIONS,’ then tap Application manager.

=> Swipe right to the ALL screen.

=> Scroll to and tap Google+.

=> Tap Stop button.

6. Booting in Safe Mode

=> Turn the device off.

=> Press and hold the Power key.

=> When ‘Samsung Galaxy S5’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.

=> Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.

=> Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.

=> Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.

=> Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

7. Wipe Cache Partition

=> Turn off the device.

=> Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.

=> When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.

=> When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.

=> Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’

=> Press the Power key to select.

=> When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.

=> Press the Power key to restart the device.

8.Factory Reset

=> Pull down the notification bar and tap Settings

=> Tap Back and reset under User and Backup

=> Tap Factory data reset

=> Tap Reset device

=> Tap Delete all and wait

=> Reboot the phone

9.Full Master Reset

=> Turn off the device.

=> Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.

=> When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up     key and the Home key.

=> When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.

=> Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’

=> Press Power button to select.

=> Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.

=> Press Power button to select and start the master reset.

=> When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.

=> Press the Power key to restart the device.
