LineageOS Users Hit 1.7 million: OnePlus One Takes Lead & S3 Followed

LineageOS has 1.7 million active users, the company reports today. The OnePlus One is the most popular model, followed by the Samsung Galaxy S3 from 2012.

It is a common complaint among owners of Android phones: the update policy. Or rather, the lack of updates. Many manufacturers often only support their devices for 2 years, whereas iPhones are often actively supported for up to 4 years. On top of this disadvantage for Android owners is that their devices often fall behind in the area of much needed (security) updates. For example, it often happens that devices receive only a few updates per year. Especially in the lower and middle class segment, these are not unusual practices. Therefore, owners of such devices are looking for a solution, which they seem to have found largely in LineageOS.

‘OnePlus One is the most popular device’

LineageOS stems from CyanogenMod, which ran on the OnePlus One. The main purpose of the operating system is to provide devices that are no longer officially supported by the manufacturer with much-needed security updates. Last week, the operating system celebrated its first anniversary and thus decided to throw some statistics into the world. One year after incorporation 1.7 million people use the software actively, so we can read. Most popular device is the OnePlus One, from 2014. Then the Samsung Galaxy S3 from 2012. Then follow the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 , Motorola Moto G from 2015and Samsung Galaxy S5. LineageOS is compatible with about 180 phones. According to statistics, there are about 9,000 active users in the Netherlands. LineageOS is the most popular in India, China, Brazil, Russia and Germany. Note: these are absolute figures, and no relative proportions.

About the OnePlus One

The OnePlus Onenowadays goes through life as the original ‘Flagship killer’. The device from 2014 cost little, brought a lot and challenged parties like Samsung to prove their added value. Where his competitors often cost around 700 euros, you had to pay ‘only’ 299 euros for the OnePlus One. For that you got a stylishly designed device with beautifully finished back of Sandstone Black material. In daily use the device was nice and fast because of the excellent Snapdragon 801 processor. You also had nothing to complain about in terms of camera performance.

As icing on the cake, the device also turned a very bare version of Android, namely Cyanogenmod. Later this software was followed by OxygenOS, OnePlus’ own Android skin. The advantage of such software is that it is largely stripped of bloatware.
