If Your iPhone Stop Working – Here’s how to fix it

The reasons for the alleged defect of your device can be repair or solve and can be remedied with a few simple steps. In most circumstances, it’s as a result of the iPhone battery is deep discharge, or there was a problem during the last update. Less common are cases where iOS maintenance updates disable certain devices, such as the iPad 2 when upgrading to iOS 9.3. So, do not panic, if your iPhone or iPad is not working and have a brick iPhone or iPad lies in front of you, maybe there is still a spark of digital life in the device. This is how you proceed in detail:

1. iPhone does not work anymore: First of all charge

What sounds banal at first is for non-functional iPhones and iPads, but the most common reason for failure: The battery has too little charge. In particular, the batteries of older and over time heavily strained devices can stop earlier than expected the service and completely discharged. Therefore, connect the iPhone to the charger and wait at least ten minutes until you try to turn it back on. Already for a start, it needs sufficient energy before it will not react to pressing the power button. Perhaps, however, is the undersupply of the battery because the charger and cable are defective.

Try a different plug and cable, especially if they are visibly damaged. How do some cases know in which a dirty Lightning socket prevented charging?

If necessary, you borrow the hardware for this; you would certainly in the next Apple Store helped further. You’ll have to visit them anyway if you can be sure that you have enough charge on the iPhone, but still not. Then there may be hardware damage. However, if it does start noticeably after loading, but at some point stops the process, you are dealing with a software problem that we want to solve in the next steps.

2. iPhone stops working: reset

In itself, this measure is known from earlier, when the computer went on strike or the TV or another electronic device: switching off and on again often works wonders. Well, you’re having trouble turning it on, but one thing that turns off the iPhone or iPad completely and restarts it is resetting.

To do this, on the iPhone models up to and including the iPhone 6S (Plus), hold down the power button and the home button for about 5 to 15 seconds until the apple appears on the screen. From the iPhone 7 (Plus), the key combination has changed since the home button is no longer a real button. Instead, press the power button and the squeeze button simultaneously for that time and wait for the iPhone to finish booting. Owners of an iPhone X need to press a different key combination: on this device, first press the volume up key, then the volume down key, and then press the key on the right until the Apple logo appears.
The iPhone should always hang on the charging cable to be able to rule out battery problems. If everything is alright now, you do not need to keep reading. However, if your iOS device does not go beyond the “apple screen” at boot time, you’ll need to recover it with the help of your Mac or PC to save what you can save.

3. iPhone stops working: restore

If the measures have not helped so far, you can try the iPhone via iTunes to delete and set up again. To do this, connect it to the Mac or PC via USB cable and start iTunes, There, first click on the icon of the device and then on “iPhone Restore.” The management software will first try to back up the data contained on the iPhone or iPad and install a new firmware. After that, iTunes will ask if it should recover the device from an existing backup or completely rebuild it – the second option may result in loss of data, but will usually return a clean and error-free iPhone. It can take a few hours to figure out in which backups or copies you saved your data because you should have done that at some point.

A more rigorous way to recover is when you put the iPhone in DFU mode. To do this, press the power button and the home button at the same time as you turn on the power and connect the device to Mac or PC on which iTunes is already running. Once the screen shows an icon with a USB cable and an arrow pointing to the iTunes icon, you can loosen the grip. The restoration then happens in the manner described above.
For the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, you must first turn off the connected device. Now press the power button on the right side and keep it pressed. After three seconds, additionally, press the volume down button and keep it pressed as well. After ten seconds let go of the power button, after another five seconds and the quieter button. The screen should stay black.

4. iPhone is not on: back to the old iOS

This measure is only possible if your problem has occurred after installing a maintenance update and only so long as the signature for the old system is valid. It usually expires a few days after the release of an iOS update. Theoretically, this should happen immediately, but in the past there have always been problems with updates, so that Apple only makes the way back after a few days or a few weeks, when it is certain that the new iOS version contains no general errors or such, which occur in more than just isolated configurations. But to get back to an old version of iOS at all, you have to use the system in the form of a. ipsw file on your machine – as part of a previous backup in the folder  / Library / iTunes / iPhone Software Updates. Of course, you can also google for .ipsw files, but they are not always trustworthy.

5. iPhone does not work anymore: use another Mac or PC

Even though the DFU mode does not work on your computer, try again on another Mac or PC. A driver conflict may prevent the recovery from occurring on the other machine.

6. iPhone stops working: replace and replace

Does not help anything, remains only in the Apple Store to make an appointment or to take the support of the manufacturer via chat or phone. If it is a warranty case, Apple must give after three unsuccessful attempts to repair a new device – according to judgment is a remanufactured not, If the iPhone or iPad is a bit older. However, you will have to put in the bag for repair and replacement. At the Genius Bar at the nearest Apple Store, you’ll be able to see the details and then decide if it’s still worth repairing.

Before you make your way to the next Apple Store, you can clarify the situation with the Apple employee in advance. In the support area, Apple has specially set up a form for such cases. On the support page, select your device, then the direction of the repair, in this case, “Battery and Power,” on the bottom side you will see the option “The iPhone will not turn off.” After the click, the user still has the choice of what he wants to do next: send in the device for repair, chat with the employee or make a phone call.

Alternative: A convenient way to find a suitable repair shop, offers the online service Clickrepair. First, select your device and the defect. Then you will receive a list of workshops, which you bring the device (usually faster) or free to send (usually cheaper). You will also see the price estimated for the repair here. Before ordering, clarify directly with the workshop whether a rescue without loss of data is possible. The corresponding contact details are displayed in step 4 of the ordering process.

7. iPhone is no longer on jailbreak

Only in exceptional cases, such as third-party replacement hardware in conflict with the original components and software, may you consider jailbreaking. For this, you need at least access via DFU mode. Otherwise, this way is installed.

8. iPhone is not working anymore: search online for help

Sometimes the situation is tricky, say in the spring of 2016, when a maintenance update disabled certain devices. These were third-party repaired iPhone and iPads with Touch ID, due to a security measure Apple denied the service and showed only the error 53. The manufacturer is now in control of this specific problem, but in future emergencies, it does not hurt to search online to see if others are aware of this problem. Sometimes the solution is just an extra click away, but sometimes it can take a few days to find the cause and solutions.

9. iPhone is not working anymore: recycling at Apple

Everything tried, nothing helps? The Genius in the Apple Store looks at you even perplexed, or the advisor of the 2nd-level support on the Apple hotline is at its end with his Latin? Then you have to face the fact: Even iPhones and iPads can break. The garbage bin is the completely wrong place for disposal, the recycling center of the community only slightly better. Ideally, bring the broken iPhone back to where you got it from the Apple Store. Because Apple not only takes back old equipment for free but can also do something with it.

The company has set itself the high goal in the spring of 2017, all in the medium term for the iPhone production to source necessary raw materials as recycled materials. The path is admittedly still far, but the target is gradually in sight. Apple is already using aluminum to build new phones that were once an iPhone or iPad.

For completely defective old devices, you will not get credit for anything at Apple, but the environment will be grateful if you return the electronic scrap, which was still expensive state-of-the-art technology a few years ago, back to the manufacturer bring.
